Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year.
It is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. (Source: Understanding the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation)
For me, this day is about understanding and compassion. It is also about recognizing as a society that we can learn from our past and we can make a choice to do better in the future.
It is about giving children and adults a safe space to speak openly about their past and current struggles without judgement.
My hope is to always be that safe space for someone when they need it.
Today I ask you to put judgement aside and replace it with curiosity and compassion.
Set your intention today to be one of openness, understanding and kindness.
If you ever feel alone, please reach out.
I know that when I was struggling at points in my life, one kind word, one warm smile or a hug was all that I needed.
